OCTOBER 2005 RECAP
I made it back from Vegas & the Ironteam Season officially started! I’m going to post just the highlights of October 2005 to catch up faster. But if anyone really feels like they’re missing out, let me know and I’ll add in more graphic details. This is a long one, bare with me!
OCTOBER 2005 HIGHLIGHTS
Simpson Doherty Wedding: Fabulous! Rebecca & Mike planned a wonderful wedding and took terrific care of their guests! I had a tremendous time! I made wonderful new friends, flew over the Grand Canyon by helicopter, ate delicious meals and had big fun! I even managed to go on two runs and complete two swim workouts. And new friends I made are coming to visit in Summer 2006. Yay!
Ironteam Kickoff: I missed the official kickoff but I did talk to my new mentor, Christy, on the phone from Sin City. She’s a great mentor! This is a good omen!
The Relay October 15-16 (formerly the Providian Relay): I’ve heard so much about “The Relay” http://www.therelay.com/index.htm over the years, that I was really excited to be asked to join a team, 24 Feet of Fury! It was a blast! We ran from Calistoga to Santa Cruz, that’s 199 miles, to benefit Organs R US: http://www.therelay.com/organs/indexmain.html I may have slept a total of 6 hours over the weekend, from Friday through Sunday. I ran the first leg of each of our van’s three sections: 1. the start in Calistoga, 2. as the sun went down in Nicasio, northern Marin County & 3. as the sun rose through Woodside & Redwood City.
Here are my team’s results: (that’s 31 hours!)
Place: 52 Time: 31:35:35; Team: 24 Feet Of Fury; Start: 9:00 AM Oct 15 Finish: 4:35 PM Oct 16
Memorable Relay Tidbits: 12 people, 2 vans, red shirts, black shorts, 24 painted feet on both vans, one broken arm, a full moon, crack-laced potato chips, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow (LSH) run leg, 5 Bitches & 1 Stud VS 4 Studs & 1 Bitches, incredible generosity, sleep deprivation, very cool van decorations, great camaraderie, terrific support and bonding, bonding, bonding and so much more. . .
Here are particularly memorable quotes compiled by Jill our amazing chief driver: Christina: “I’m sorry you lost your dick in the accident.” Tracy: “Wait, wait…what do you mean…like…what kind of sexual dysfunctions?” {book discussion on Middlesex which Christina & I had both just read} Paige: “Dude, can I have the mace…I’m spooked.” Beverly: “Hey, wait, wait your van copied us…Excuse me, do you know that you have the word “Fag” written on your side mirror?” And my favorite quote of Jill’s: "She's kinda freaked - let's follow her close", repeated every two minutes during the LSH run leg. I can’t believe I don’t have any photos from the whole weekend!
The previous paragraph could be filed under “You had to be there” , but David’s quote was truly the best and deserves it’s own spotlight! (And I am NOT making this up!!) Here it is:
David was the lone man in our van of five women (which grew to six women when our teammate from the other van broke her arm running in the dark). He put up with a lot from us, and provided us with much humor fodder too. David really hadn’t run farther than three miles since high school. He also never drinks water when he runs, and never drinks electrolyte replacements—ever! You can imagine how much grief we gave him on both subjects. He was lectured about proper hydration by everyone in the van, more than once! But we were glad to have him with us, and he ran the leg through Sausalito on the dark & scary bike path with no lights and where the van couldn’t follow! Big stud! I would have been wicked scared to do that!!
Nike Women’s Marathon 10.23.05
The weekend after the 199 mile Relay, I ran half of the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco. This entire event benefited the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, many cancer survivors and people currently undergoing treatment ran along side us. It was very inspiring!
When I ran it in 2004, it was the first ½ marathon I’d ever attempted and my second ever race. This year I ran it with several friends from my first TNT triathlon team, Chienyo, Michele, Jeremiah, Ellen & Matt (if I’ve left out anyone, let me know!). We had a great time and took it easy. I was happy to do so since I was still recovering from The Relay and the big-time cold I came down with afterwards. My final time was 2:50:37, not my fastest time, but still 27 minutes faster than the previous year. Michele and I spent a whopping 12 minutes in the port-a-potty line which really packed on the time!

Chienyo's arm waving, Michele in blue shirt, Jeremiah in black shirt, me in white cap and a random woman who thought we were hilarious!
Ironteam Training
We’ve begun the “Base Phase” which lasts until January 30. We workout six days a week with Monday as a rest day. So far the workouts are about an hour a day, either swimming, biking or running, with double workouts on the weekends. We’ve had coached swims, runs & rides and a bike maintenance workshop. Everyone is really nice and our coaches and captains are terrific! So far the days are fairly easy but I can already tell how hard it’s going to be later. The mentors, captains and coaches who completed an Ironman last year are light-years ahead of us in stamina & fitness. They’ve had a few months off, but I can really see a difference between them and those of us coming over from the triathlon team. This is going to be a long and grueling program. August 27 seems a very long time away!
My October cold is still hanging around and making the runs & rides difficult. Between Vegas & The Relay, I really got run down.
But it’s nothing compared to radiation!
